VERY FAMOUS POEM FROM OUR DEAR RUDYARD KIPLING
TITLE: THE WHITE MAN'S BURDEN
Take up the White Man's burden -
Send forth the best ye breed -
Go bind your sons to exile
To serve your captives' need;
To wait in heavy harness
On fluttered folk and wild -
Your new-caught, sullen peoples,
Half devil and half child.
And so on it goes in six other stanzas.
Now read this poem from Dennis Scott called
They hanged him on a clement morning, swung
between the falling sunlight and the women's
breathing like a black apostrophe to pain.
All morning while the children hushed
their hopscotch joy and the cane kept growing
he hung there sweet and low.
At least that's how
they tell it. It was long ago
and what can we recall of a dead slave or two
except that when we punctuate our island tale
they swing like sighs across the brutal sentences, and anger pauses
till they pass away.
YOU'LL TELL ME, COME ON, THIS IS THE PAST. WE KNOW ALL THIS BULLSHIT. IT'S TIME FOR US TO GET OUT OF THIS NIGHTMARE AND LOOK UP FOR THE FUTURE. YEAH, YEAH, BUT I'M NOT CONVINCED.
1)Do you think that all Blacks are dirty and therefore Kipling was right when he said we, white people, should give them a good bath? Or do you think that Kipling was himself a dirty piece of shit and therefore he reported his shit on other people?
2)Is it true that Blacks are lazy, illiterate, brutal, uncivilised, savage? Illustrate your answer by taking a contemporary example: the treatment of the Blacks by French people in France.
3)what does civilisation mean?
